BLACKWOOD – The Cougars of Camden County College are eyeing a season sweep against their rivals, Cumberland County College.
The April 9 game will be the finale of a two-game set against the Dukes of Cumberland County. The first game was played on March 14 at Cumberland County, in which Camden County came out with a 13 to 8 win. It was an offensive explosive for the Cougars, scoring four runs in the fourth inning thanks to Brain Beyer, who hit a one-out grand slam. But the Cougars were not finished – they scored six runs in the sixth inning to break the game open 11 to 3 entering the seventh inning. Cumberland County had a terrible day on the defensive side of the ball, committing six errors. The Dukes did manage to make a rally late in the game but ultimately fell short.
Beyer, starting catcher for the Cougars, expects another tight contest when the two teams meet April 9. “They committed six errors in that game, which probably won’t happen again. They had a rally when the game got out of hand, so we know we got to protect home turf,” Beyer said. Protecting home turf will be a tough task for the Cougars because Cumberland County posts a 5-1 record on the road.
Earlier in the season Cumberland County played Delaware Technical & Community College in a two-game set, Cumberland County lost the opener but won the next game with a dominant performance of a score of 9-2.
Joshua Fontanez, an outfielder for Camden County College, understands the importance of the game. “They are in our conference, we have to beat teams in our conference. Seeing and playing a team again is always difficult, because they adjust from the first game, but we adjust as well,” Fontanez said.
The game between the Dukes of Cumberland County College and the Cougars of Camden County College will start at 3:30 p.m. April 9 in Blackwood. The game is open to the public. There are no admission charges or parking charges, said Director of Athletics Peter DiLorenzo.
