Benjamin Nathans, an associate professor of history at the University of Pennsylvania, will conduct the special event lecture, The Soviet Dissident Movement in Historical Perspective, from 7 to 9 p.m. in Civic Hall on the Blackwood campus. The Center for Civic Leadership and Responsibility is organizing the event.

The presentation will focus mainly on the historical context of the Russian dissidents – people who actively challenged an established doctrine, policy or institution – and how they were on a mission to transform Russia and “to live free citizens in an un-free country.”

Nathans was unavailable for comment.

Ilya Rell, a native of Russia and a student of CCC who will be attending the presentation with his parents and his sister, said he hopes his classmates will get the opportunity to attend the presentation.

“It’s exciting that events like this are happening at my college, so other students can learn about the battle we are fighting and how we persevered,” Rell said. “It also gives American students and citizens the chance to hone their knowledge about it and not have to pay for it either.”
