BLACKWOOD – Members of the Camden County College community are forming a Lions Club, part of an international group committed to helping others.

Club President Bailey Wood and Professor Allison Green held a meeting Feb. 27 to invite students to volunteer to join the Camden County College Lions Club. The two sought to develop a registry and recruit members for the club.

“There were about 30 to 35 volunteers on the registration form but there aren’t any decisions yet” about accepting them, Green said.

Lions Clubs International describes itself as the largest service organization in the world, with more than 1.4 million members and 46,000 clubs in more than 200 countries, and is dedicated to helping those in need in a variety of ways, including by supporting vision care, hunger relief, diabetes awareness and environmental preservation. Lions Club International celebrated its centennial last year.

The priority now for the Camden County College Lions Club is to focus on helping with efforts that don’t get much attention and to encourage volunteerism, Green said. That includes requesting donations of toiletries such as soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, tampons and shampoo to the CCC food pantry to help with basic needs of college and community members.

The club is continuing to recruit members. The date for its next meeting has not been set.
