BLACKWOOD – The Camden County College Foundation collected more than $10,000 on the annual Giving Tuesday on Nov. 28. Donations will go to scholarships for CCC students and other academic enhancements.
About 50 people contributed to the Camden County College Foundation’s fundraising campaign during the global day for charity.
“#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration,” states the Giving Tuesday organization on website. The first Giving Tuesday was held in 2012 and the effort has been conducted every year since then on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving in the United States and after the three big shopping days, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday.
Giving Tuesday was created by the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact in New York and according to the organization’s website, the purpose of the event is to “connect diverse groups of individuals, communities and organizations around the world for one common purpose: to celebrate and encourage giving.”
According to the organization, the global giving day was marked in more than 98 countries, including Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Panama, Liberia and the United States, and collected 1.64 million gifts totaling $177 million online this year.
Melissa Daly, who is in charge of the Camden County College Foundation and alumni relations at CCC, and Myra Tyron, her assistant, coordinated CCC’s participation in the activity. “The donations are going to various scholarships and the foundation’s general fund, which is used to support various scholarships and academic enhancements,” said Daly.
Donations made throughout the year help the college and its students, Daly said. “Each year, because of generosity from individuals, the Camden County College Foundation awards more than $200,000 in scholarships to CCC students, in addition to approximately $100,000 in support of other programs at CCC,” Daly said.
