BLACKWOOD- The Camden County College Cougars softball team lost to the Anne Arundel Community College Riverhawks 10-7 on April 21. This was the second game of a doubleheader that day.

Lindsey Farmer of Somerdale started for the Lady Cougars and pitched until the beginning of the seventh inning. Angel Benjamin of Somerdale pitched the remainder of the game for CCC.

Anne Arundel, from Arnold, Md., went scoreless in the top of the first inning after Farmer dove for a catch. Outfielder Lorraine Velez of Pennsauken caught two fly balls to end the first half of the inning.

Joscelyn Parrella of Sicklerville put the Lady Cougars on the board after she walked and later scored on an error. The Cougars led 1-0 after the first inning.

Farmer opened the second inning by walking the first batter and striking out the second. Jenna Tolen of Sicklerville and Danielle Cutrera of Collingswood ended the first half of the second inning by catching two fly balls.

The Lady Cougars came up big in the bottom of the second inning. Savannah Bittner of Waterford started it by walking and later scoring to put the Cougars up 2-0. Tolen then walked and made it home on an error. Farmer walked and reached second on an error. Christina Olsen of Bellmawr hit a double, scoring Farmer. Parrella hit a single and got her second RBI of the game. The Cougars were up at the end of the second 6-0.

The Riverhawks scored two runs in the top of the fourth to make the score 6-2. Kaitlyn Nutwell walked and scored on a single by Hannah Neal.

Parrella walked to open the bottom of the fourth inning, stole second and later scored for the Lady Cougars. Parrella had two RBIs and scored three runs in the game.

Neither team scored in the fifth and sixth innings.

The Riverhawks scored eight runs in the top of the seventh inning. Gabrielle Bobel singled and scored. Alyssa Thompson was hit by the ball to get to first base, then stole second and third. Neal got her second RBI when she batted in Jenna Weinstein. Logan Endley-Abbott walked and scored on a hit by Alexxis Evans.

The Cougars failed to score in the bottom of the seventh.

“After a loss like this we just have to continue to improve,” said second-year Head Coach Chip Reitano. “There were some fielding mistakes at the end that got us.”

Reitano said the players will keep working hard.

“We have to learn how to focus when it gets tough out there,” Reitano said.

The game brought the Cougars record to 15-16.
