Tim Holmes, a tutor at Camden County College, first took interest in tutoring when he was laid off from his full-time job at L3 Communications, an engineering firm.

Holmes decided to walk into the director’s office, Patricia A. Engel, and asked if they were hiring for tutoring positions. They were. Within five minutes, Engel said yes and offered Holmes a job.
“I like teaching,” Holmes said. “I enjoy doing this because it is fun and it’s also relaxing.”
Holmes said the hardest part of his job is “people with different personalities, it makes it harder to teach.” He said the easiest part of his job is “teaching students that prepare themselves beforehand and are not just looking for a handout with all the answers.”
Hilda Martinez, who was working on statistics homework while waiting for Holmes recently, said she preferred Holmes as her tutor. “I prefer Tim because he is understanding of what I need help with, also he is patient and continues to help me with the problems until I fully understand,” Martinez said.
“Students that really try are the ones that do well and pass, whereas when they come into tutoring knowing nothing in advance and expect me to explain everything A to Z every time, they are the ones that don’t do well or sometimes fail because they don’t try,” Holmes said.
He added, “Everybody has different abilities, some people are sharp and fast, and others have different learning abilities or priorities.”
Holmes hopes to begin teaching math and physics in September.
“I would definitely take his class, he is patient and I know I would be able to ask any and as many questions as I need to,” Martinez said.
